Whats New - Job Search and More - CareerAlley

Whats New - Job Search and More - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. We are currently not planning on conquering the world. We are currently not planning on conquering the world. Sergey Brin Imagine that youve been looking for a job for six months and youve had virtually no luck. Yes, you get the occasional interest, but nothing serious. You begin to feel like there is something wrong with you. Most likely there is nothing wrong with you, but it might be time to make a change in your approach. There is always something new in job search on the Internet. Of course new is a relative term. What is new to me may not necessarily be new to you (or the Internet). New or not, any change you make to your approach gives you a bit of a fresh start (which is not a bad thing). So, lets explore a few career sites that might be new to you. Speedupcareer.com The tag line on this site is Jobs Careers section featuring useful advice tips on work and job related issues and the site lives up to that. There are tabs at the top of the page for Career, Career Change Job, Work Career and more. Each of these tabs seem to link to a Google ad with related links. The mains page is structured by topic, leading with Resume Writing Tips and followed by Cover Letters, Career Development and a host of other career related topics. Each topic has related links. Once you click on any of the topic links, you will see an article on the topic. On the right hand side of the page there are links for the latest articles and links to the other career categories. This site is definitely worth a read. RezScore This site offers a free web app that reads, analyzes, and grades your resume. How cool is that? We all worry about our resume, while we think it is great, what will the interviewing manager think? Using this site, you can take some of that apprehension out of the equation. How does it work? From the main page, upload your resume and you are on your way. Once you get your grade, you can view tips for improvement, get a resume makeover, see potential job matches and more. Healthcareercenter.org This is a career and job search site that focuses on (as you might have guessed) health careers. There are tabs at the top of the page for Explore Careers, Job Search, Salary Info and more. Center page is a list of health careers by category, each with links to a dedicated page on that topic. Clicking Job Search returns a page with job search by industry (top half) followed by State. Additionally, there are job search resource links at the bottom of the page. Take a look. The New (Job Search) Rules This article was posted on dreams-goals.com and covers three primary career rules. This is a must read whether youve been working for 30 years or are still in school. So often we forget (or perhaps never learned) the key traits for success. Some of us learn it as we go and others seem to get it from the start (and still others will never get it). The Life Skills piece that follows is as much a requirement for career success as are the career rules. 5 Positively Propelling Job Search Tips A great read if youve been struggling in your search. In addition to providing great tips (see below), the lead-in will hit home for anyone who has spent any length of time looking for a job (with limited success). The tips, from managing your expectations to transforming yourself are all great ideas. Other Resources: Onlinecollege.org Thinking about college? Find the online college to meet your needs. Help for job seekers in a rut -

Help for job seekers in a rut - There is a church down the road from my house with a marquee. It says, Dont count the new year. Make the new year count! That message really rings true for me. So, how to make the most of the new year? Count on yourself! Stop trying to follow everyones rules. Think bigger what have you NOT been doing that you can engage in during the weeks and months ahead? It would be a stretch for me to say there are no rules for job seekers. There are some: have error-free materials, targeted to your employer of interest. Know what it is you have to offer (your pitch). Follow up (always). Have plans and execute them. Stay organized. Id be willing to say that these are rules of job search. Follow them. Think about it when is the last time you tried something new? Extended your comfort zone when it came to job seeking? For me, the obvious go-to extensions are social media avenues. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. There are people who will suggest rules to use these tools. For example, they will try to detail how many tweets you should send daily on Twitter, how much time to spend there and dictate how many of those tweets should be personal or professional. The problem with these rules is an underlying truth (maybe this is actually a firm rule I believe is true): THERE IS NO ONE RIGHT WAY for all job seekers! You are unique and different from every other person. Taking advice for the masses is not likely to help you very much. The media enjoys sharing stories of job seekers who engage in creative tactics. A sandwich board wearing job seeker. Someone who hands out resumes at the grocery store. Job seekers who advertise on Facebook. Or Jamie Varon, whose campaign to get a job with Twitter garnered tons of attention, a lunch meeting with Twitter execs and a job somewhere else. (Jamie now reportedly lives in Italy and is working for herself.) While I am not a big fan of measures that make job seekers appear desperate (a la the sandwich board), that does not mean that it is impossible to be successful with unusual tactics. When is the last time you brainstormed atypical job search methods? For that matter, have you taken advantage of methods Ive   shared in previous posts? Use LinkedIn to your advantage. Generate a professional Twitter profile. Engage in creative uses for Facebook. Activate your in-person network. Before you go off the deep end (again, a la sandwich board), make sure you are covering your bases. I wish I could tell you just what to do en masse. However, that would be contradictory to the main message here. YOU need to take the wheel. YOU are responsible for figuring out what you are missing. Can I help you, one-on-one? Of course! Thousands at one time? With guidelines and suggestions, yes. With detailed advice specific to you? Probably not. Think: Whom have you NOT met in person that you might LOVE to meet? Whens the last time you spoke to someone you did NOT think could help you? (You may be surprised.) How can you make it happen? (You CAN make it happen just use some creative thinking and engage with the tools at your disposal.) Get out of your rut by doing something new. Make a plan. Make it happen. You can do it! Don’t forget that clear, concise, optimized job search materials AND a strong, well executed plan are key for job search success! I can help with every part of your job hunt! Need a great resume? Tips to use social networking? Interview coaching? If you need help mobilizing your networks and your job search plans, learn more about how I can help you! While you’re at it, don’t forget those social networks! Be sure to become a fan of Keppie Careers on Facebook…I’d be thrilled to have you as part of the community! 7 Signs You Nailed Your Interview Even if It Doesnt Feel Like It

7 Signs You Nailed Your Interview Even if It Doesnt Feel Like ItIf you walk out of your interview and arent 100% sure you nailed it (or bombed it), you might spend the next few days stewing about how it went. But you dont have to agonize in the dark. It is possible to tell more or less how youll fareeven between the extremes of horrible and perfectly. Here are some telltale signs that it went wellso well that you might even get the job googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) 1. Your interviewerhad a good time. You genuinely got the impression that your interviewer welches having a good time during the conversation. You ran over your allotted time. And beyond that, their body language suggested as much, as well. They were smiling, nodding, leaning in, and making eye contact. And the smile was genuinewith engagement of the eyes and everything.2. You got a tour.Did your interviewer, after your conversation, show you around the office before showing you out? This is a good indicator that theyre seriously considering you. Bonus points if they introduced you to any members of your would-be team.3. You felt like they were selling you.Your interviewer made a point of trying to sell you on the companythey didnt just watch you do backflips to tryto prove your worth. For example,if they spend a lot of time talking about company policies, benefits, and perks and pay, youre probably golden.4. They asked for references.Typically, hiring managers dont bother asking for references they arent going to bother calling. If youre asked for yours, thats a good sign and usually means they plan on contacting your recommenders. Bonus points if they also mention theyll be running a background check these are expensive and they dont run them willy nilly.5. There was a lingering goodbye.Did it seem like your interviewer, when walking you out, didnt quite want you to leave? Did she stick around loitering in the lobby with you making idle conversation? These are signs of how comfortable she feels with youas if youre already a colleague, not a candidate.6. Follow-up is made explicit.Instead of a vague not to being in touch, the follow-up process is discussed with particulars. They ask about your timeline and interview status. They make references to the next steps, and not just in a generic way. Maybe they let you know exactly when to expect to hear from them and ask how best you can be reached.7. You get called back in for another round.Only finalists make the second round of interviews. Congrats, youre on your way Now you just have to do the whole thing over again. Show up, dress nicely, sparkle, and be engaging and confident without being arrogant or smug. Remember to send a handwritten thank you notenzeichen for that interview, as well. Repeat all the good things you did for round one, and hopefully youll have that same good gut feeling after. Thats usually another good sign that you just might land the job.

Elon Musk Knows When Job Applicants Are Lying Heres How

Elon Musk Knows When Job Applicants Are Lying Heres How Honesty is an essential quality for any employee to have. As an applicant, though, it can be tempting to stretch the truth to spruce up your resume or embellish your experience. If youve made these exaggerations, you arent alone 81 percent of people lie during job interviews.Because interview overstatements are so common, geschftsleben leaders are becoming more savvy about spotting lies. Sure, there are the semi-notorious tell tale signs that signal lying, like glancing to the right or repeating questions. But looking for lies with these methods is far from being an exact science. So, short of hooking potential employees up to a polygraph machine, how can a business owner verify an applicants honesty? Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a solution.Musk claims that hes able to effectively weed out liars with one follow-up question What were the most difficult aufgabes you faced and how did you solve them? While many interviewers ask job seeke rs the first question, the second half is where the magic happens. If the candidate is able to explain the process by which the solutions were found, you have a winneror at the very least an honest applicant.Anyone who struggles hard with a problem never forgets it, Musk said. They know the little details.COMPANY_AD_STANDALONEPretending to solve a problem becomes apparent when someone starts to speak and only glosses over the details. If an applicant is unable to provide specifics for how a problem was solved, they may have had a smaller role in finding a resolution than they are claiming. While its totally acceptable to play up your strengths and downplay your weaknesses during an interview, getting caught over embellishing could cost you a job you may have gained by being honest. You can give your deficiencies a positive spin by describing the skills you do have that are similar to those you are asked about, as opposed to lying about the skill. For example, if youre asked if you have experience working with a software program youre unfamiliar with, tell your interviewer about a program you are advanced in using. Alternatively, explain your willingness to learn the system. If youre asked about your skill level when you have only little experience, acknowledge that you recognize your deficiency and are still in the process of improving. Employers want to hire willing applicants who put in the effort to improve themselves and by extension, improve the company.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize-nominated poet.
