Picture Book Review Black Diamond And Blake
Blog & website of children's book author Tara Lazar Picture Book Review: Black Diamond and Blake Once there were crowds, and clinging jockeys, and horses to ride against in the razor-fine seconds it took to be first across the finish line. As an aspiring author, Iâve been told countless times about the importance of a first line. Never before has a picture book opening reined me in so tightly, so swiftly as Deborah Blumenthalâs Black Diamond and Blake, the story of a racehorse saved by friendship. Black Diamond, a beloved racehorse, hero of the grandstand crowds, wins race after race. His jockey and owner feed him sweet apples, warm him with a red velvet blanket, and wrap him with such kindness that the horse only wants to win and make them proud. But no athlete can dominate forever. Black Diamond grows sore, tired and eventually becomes injured. His fans boo instead of celebrate, ripping their losing tickets and tossing them to the ground. The sweet apples and sweet attention disappear. A gruff, cigar-smoking man purchases Black Diamond and takes the horse to a prison rehabilitation program. The author was inspired by a New York Times article about inmates who cared for retired racehorses. âI read of the deep emotional connections that some inmates made with the animals, so that in the end, men saved horses and horses saved men,â Blumenthal explains. At the prison, Black Diamond meets Blake, a soft-spoken man who feeds the horse cinnamon candies and takes him on long walks. The two bond in friendship. And then, one day, Blake is released and Black Diamond becomes despondent and difficult, longing for his caretaker, his best friend. As usual, I never reveal a bookâs ending, but the book is titled Black Diamond and Blake for a reason. The Art-Deco-inspired illustrations by Miles Hyman render bold forms with a soft pastel stroke, a visual juxtaposition befitting this tale of a strong yet sensitive racehorse. The book is gorgeous in all respectsâ"from the language, to the theme, to the green hills of the final spread. Parents may appreciate Blumenthalâs beautiful words more than children (âin a minute that grew heavy with timeâ) and those younger than five may not be able to sit for the entire tale, although my horse-lovers, aged three and six, were mesmerized. While the publisher claims itâs appropriate for children up to age eight, I foresee this book being enjoyed by children as old as ten or twelve, especially if they love animals. Black Diamond and Blake never gets too sappy or sentimental, but instead tells a story of friendship and second chances from the thrill of the races to the gentleness of a rolling countryside. Want it? Sure you do! Black Diamond and Blake Story by Deborah Blumenthal Illustrations by Miles Hyman Alfred A. Knopf, February 2009

The environment and your health - why you should care - Hallie Crawford
The environment and your health - why you should care - Hallie Crawford If youve been reading my blog for a while youll know that one of my values is health: my physical health and the health of the environment. This is one of my values for a very personal reason. I share this with you simply to heighten awareness of what chemicals we have around us, and how they may affect us. When I was about 12 years old, I ended up in the hospital for 3 months with a rare disease called Kawasaki syndrome. At the time the doctors werent sure what caused it, at first they werent even sure what was wrong with me. Some doctors suspected it was caused by carpet cleaner. My friend had her carpets steam cleaned the day before I arrived to sleep over at her house. I slept on the floor that night and a few days later was very sick. I am fine now, but to this day I pay closer attention to what is in the food I eat and the chemicals I use around the house. Now I need to be up front here, there is no conclusive evidence that it was caused by the carpet cleaner. When I just looked on the Internet this is one statement I found: Microorganisms and toxins have been suspected, but none has been identified to date. So maybe it was the cleaner, maybe not. I think we can go to the other extreme here, and be too alarmist about all of this. I am a proponent of everything in moderation. But I was scared enough to not want to take the chance and to pay closer attention to what products I was using. Consider using environmentally-friendly products, for you and for the environment. Heres an Ideal Bite post I received recently about a better kind of bleach: Get your whites brighter without the health risks of chlorine. Just try an oxygen-based formula. What's more, this is something we once in a while instruct purposely and never educate well. Telling children the best way to perceive and manage sentiments forestalls bad conduct - and it's an ability that will serve them their whole lives. It forestalls fits of rage at age 4 but at the same time it's the contrast between setting aside school cash and setting aside bail cash later on. Take a gander at it as potty preparing for feelings. But how do we do that?Professor John Gottman is the person who reformed the investigation of connections, coming to the heart of the matter where he could tune in to a couple for only a couple of moments and decide with a startling measure of precision whether they'd separate. All things considered, fortunately, Gottman likewise examined parenting. And this wasn't the most recent child rearing hypothesis of-the-week that someone thought of over lunch - this was a genuinely epic investigation of brain bowing proportions. He took more than 100 wedded couples with kids ages 4 or 5 and gave them questionnaires. At that point directed a huge number of lon g stretches of meetings. He watched their conduct in his lab. Taped meetings of the children playing with their closest companions. Checked pulses, breath, blood stream and perspiring. Took pee tests - yeah, urine samples -from the children to quantify pressure related hormones. And afterward caught up with the youngsters and families right through pre-adulthood, directing more meetings, assessing scholarly execution and ⦠Okay, enough. You get it. The plans of Hollywood Bond Villains aren't this exhaustive. What's more, when it came to managing feelings, Gottman acknowledged there are 4 kinds of guardians. What's more, three ain't so hot: Excusing guardians: They dismiss, disregard, or trivialize negative feelings. Objecting guardians. They're condemning of negative sentiments and rebuff kids for passionate articulation. Free enterprise guardians: They acknowledge their kids' feelings and identify with them, yet don't offer direction or set cutoff points on conduct. Offspring of these guardians didn't work out quite as well after some time. They got into mischief more, experienced difficulty making companions or had confidence issues. One of them might be breaking into your vehicle right now.And then there were the Ultra-Parents. These moms and fathers accidentally utilized what Gottman calls feeling instructing. And this created genuinely canny children. These guardians acknowledged their youngsters' sentiments (yet not the entirety of the kids' conduct), guided the children through passionate minutes, and helped them issue unravel their way to an answer that didn't include placing the neighbor's child in the crisis room. How did these kids end up?From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:The kids were better at calming themselves when they were vexed. They could quiet down their souls quicker. On account of the predominant presentation in that piece of their physiology that is associated with quieting themselves, they had less irresistible diseases. They were better at centering consideration. They related better to others, even in the intense social circumstances they experienced in center youth like getting prodded, where being excessively enthusiastic is a risk, not an advantage. They were better at getting individuals. They would be advised to fellowships with other kids. They were additionally better at circumstances in school that necessary scholastic presentation. To put it plainly, they had built up a sort of Level of intelligence that is about individuals and the universe of sentiments, or passionate intelligence. And everything boiled down to how the guardians dealt with the kid's negative enthusiastic upheavals. These guardians completed five things that different kinds once in a while did.Alrighty, how about we get to it ⦠1) Be mindful of emotionsParenting is upsetting and can feel constant. Frequently dislike running a long distance race - it resembles running until you bite the dust. So there's a char acteristic propensity to check out when things are (at last) quiet and think, Nothing is at present ablaze. OK, life is good. But this can resemble remaining in a coal mineshaft disregarding the a large number of dead canaries. Typically feelings go before upheavals. So seeing the youngster's feelings early - and not simply the subsequent awful conduct - is critical. Not acting mischievously doesn't signify not irritated. When a uninvolved forceful companion folds their arms, glares and says, I'm fine, at least you know they're unquestionably not fine. Kids may not comprehend what they're feeling or how to best communicate it. So staying alert and seeing early can forestall Tonka trucks from taking off without FAA approval. But the issue numerous guardians have here is seeing their own emotions. In case you're not mindful of your sentiments and dispositions you'll experience difficulty seeing and identifying with those of others. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:Our reads s how that for guardians to feel what their youngsters are feeling, they should know about feelings, first in themselves and afterward in their children⦠Emotional mindfulness basically implies that you perceive when you are feeling a feeling, you can recognize your emotions, and you are delicate to the nearness of feelings in other people.Don't be hesitant to show feelings before your children. Gottman found that even outrage (as long as it's communicated consciously and productively) has its place. On the off chance that guardians keep away from demonstrating sentiments, at that point children can learn Mother and father don't have these feelings and neither ought to I.Seeing contentions and afterward observing them settled genially is much better than never observing them at all. Kids need a good example for values, yet in addition for feelings. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:Such mothers and fathers may attempt to make up for their dread of losing control by being super-guardians, concealing their feelings from their kids⦠The incongruity is that by concealing their feelings, these guardians might be raising youths who are even less equipped for dealing with negative feelings than they would have been if their folks had figured out how to let their emotions appear in a nonabusive manner. That is on the grounds that the children grow up sincerely removed from their folks. Additionally, the youngsters have one less good example to show them how to deal with troublesome feelings effectively.Shielding kids from enthusiastic circumstances and afterward sending them out into the world resembles sending a competitor to the Olympics with no preparation. Children need those minutes so as to figure out how to direct their feelings.(To become familiar with the study of an effective life, look at my top of the line book here.)Notice sentiments now and stay away from an emergency later. However, what point of view did the keen guardians take when upheav als did occur?2) Emotion is an open door for closeness and teachingIt's reasonable to consider a to be as a nonsensical bother that ought to be dispensed with ASAP. In any case, the guardians whose kids flourished considered upheavals to be showing minutes and an opportunity to bond with their child. Better believe it, that doesn't generally feel regular when a kid is furiously tossing things.Does saying anything looking like, You ought not feel thusly ever work with passionate grown-ups? Precisely. At that point it sure as damnation won't work with your child. Saying There's not something to fear, or Goodness, it'll be fine is cavalier. This is the way kids figure out how to question their own judgment and lose confidence. The Emotion-Coaching guardians understood that a fit of rage was the best an ideal opportunity to interface with their youngster and show them an important skill.Yes, you have to stop mischief right away. Yet, you need to do it in a path explicit to the kid's act ivities and not make it about their character. So you need to state, We don't paint Grandma's sofa purple, rather than, Quit being a bad dream! The youngsters who reliably heard the last didn't admission too in Gottman's follow ups. From Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child:When we checked in with these equivalent families three years after the fact, we found that the kids who experienced such rude, scornful conduct from their folks were similar children who were experiencing more difficulty with homework and coexisting with companions. These were the children who had more significant levels of pressure related hormones in their bodies. Their educators announced they were having more conduct issues, and their mothers detailed they had more illnesses. It takes practice yet you need to see children's enthusiastic torment like you'd see their physical torment. It's not their flaw. It's a test they're confronting. Also, one you can help them with.(To become familiar with the two-word wake-up routine that will fulfill all of you day, click here.)Okay, so you have the correct point of view. You're a passionate tutor, not a prison guard. Be that as it may, what do you really never really) Listen sympathetically and approve feelingsDon't contend the realities. Sentiments aren't coherent. You wouldn't anticipate that the new representative should realize how to discover the restroom and you shouldn't anticipate that a kid should realize how to deal with feelings that, in all honesty, you despite everything have issues managing following quite a while of experience.Don't quickly attempt to fix things. Those in the second group must move to the first group by recognizing their productivity could be improved by setting limits on the number and frequency of distractions. The next step is to set limits on those distractions to provide longer periods of uninterrupted productivity. Here are some starting points. Schedule Breaks When concentrating on one task for an extended period of time without breaks, productivity starts to decline rapidly. However, studies have shown that when short breaks or mental diversions are incorporated into the work schedule, the ability to focus for prolonged periods improves significantly. The key is to plan out the breaks so they donât interfere with periods of concentration and work output. One option is to work for a solid 55 minutes, then take a five-minute break to check e-mails, return phone calls and check social media sites. Stepping away from your work will allow you to return to it refreshed and reinvigorated, ready for another 55 minutes of solid productivity. However, during this time, be sure to silence your phone, close your e-mail program and turn off all push notifications on your apps. They can wait until the next break. Utilize Folders and Lists Despite the separation of work time and play time, if youâre a person who is easily distracted during periods of concentration, isolating your apps and sites that are regular offenders may help keep them out of sight and out of mind. One method is to try grouping apps into folders on your phone and utilizing Twitter lists. In the event that your work requires you to use your cell phone, social media apps and games that may be distracting can be grouped into folders and considered âoff limitsâ until time permits. Similarly, Twitter lists can be created that separate profiles used for business from those used for social or entertainment purposes. This will minimize the chances of distracting click bait entering your Twitter feed while focusing on work. Avoid the Bandwagon Every so often, a new social media site appears with enticing new features that existing sites donât offer. Suddenly, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and invests hours and hours into the site, while trying to convince their friends to join. For the next few months, people are battling for mayorship of their favorite restaurant on Foursquare, or bidding for Ello invitations on eBay, only to find out later that their new site was nothing more than a flash in the pan. Some people may consider the thrill of a new SoMe site a worthwhile use of their spare time. But for those whose time is at a premium, waiting to jump on the bandwagon until a site is legitimized will save hours, days or even weeks of time that could be better spent on more productive tasks. The Productivity Police For those who need a little help in the time-management department, there are a number of websites that may prove useful. RescueTime can be used on your computer and mobile devices to provide a detailed report of the time you spend on various websites and apps, reading e-mails or attending meetings. It can also be used to block distracting websites. If you already know the source of your distractions and are simply looking to block the violating sites, there are a number of options including Anti-Social, Cold Turkey, SelfControl and StayFocusd. Each can be set to restrict access to multiple sites for a predetermined amount of time in order to keep distractions to a minimum and keep your eyes on the prize. Even the most focused person can only hold their attention on a single task for so long before their mind needs a rest. Whatâs most important is the quality of work one can produce between periods of diversion. The amount of technology at our disposal is continuously increasing, leading to decreased attention spans. While some have the discipline to disconnect during crunch time, itâs the ones who remain unable or unwilling to look away from their mobile devices or social media accounts for a few hours that will always find staying productive a challenge. The true test will be up to the individual and his or her manager. If one of them notices decreased productivity due to constant technology distractions, it may be time to develop a plan that will help focus attention back on their work. Image: Shutterstock

Winter Blues Get a Lift With One of These Great Reads
Winter Blues Get a Lift With One of These Great Reads Blame it on the winter blues, the cloudy skies, or simply the looming thought of six more weeks of winter, theres no mistaking it. Its that low energy feeling when all you really want is a good book, a cup of coffee or tea, and a warm fire to sit next to. We cant help with the drink or fire, but we do have some pleasant suggestions for some great winter reads. If youre in the doldrums and need a little escape, or a little inspiration, heres our four suggestions for great winter reads to give you a much needed lift! Theres something for everyone here, so pick one up. Or get all four to move yourself right into spring! Whos In Your Room? Ponder the advice of these four well-known people: Jim Rohn: âYou are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.â Colin Powell: âThe less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. Mark Ambrose: âShow me your friends and Iâll show you your future.â Oprah Winfrey: âSurround yourself with those who only lift you higher.â Its pretty easy to see a common thread. And it may even bring back echoes of your parents nagging you about who you were hanging out with. But the truth in all four of those statements cannot be denied. If you dig a little deeper, youll realize that who you choose to associate with has a powerful effect on your life. Whos in Your Room helps you see the real dynamics of your relationships, what theyre costing you, and how taking control of your life is really about taking control of your relationships. Want this year to end differently, in a very good way? Get the book. Read it. Take the challenge. Operation Clusterpuck Are you a fan of The Office? Is the tube a distant second to indulging in a great book? Then youll find your business nirvana with a twist of humor, a dash of dysfunction, and a side of irreverence in Operation Clusterpuck. The second book in a (we hope) series, Operation Clusterpuck picks up the same all too familiar theme of B.S. Incorporated, which published in 2016. Who needs reality TV when life in the real world of business serves up a continual string of WTF moments! Warning: Youll LOL, so be sure to keep that coffee or tea on the table and not your lap. When youre done reading this one, you just might feel a little more normal tomorrow! The Ultimate Side Hustle Book Im convinced that one of the defining terms of this decade is side hustle. Whether its out of need (remember the post crash years . . .), or just the desire to make that business dream a reality, the number of people with a side hustle is growing every year. Whats New - Job Search and More - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. We are currently not planning on conquering the world. We are currently not planning on conquering the world. Sergey Brin Imagine that youve been looking for a job for six months and youve had virtually no luck. Yes, you get the occasional interest, but nothing serious. You begin to feel like there is something wrong with you. Most likely there is nothing wrong with you, but it might be time to make a change in your approach. There is always something new in job search on the Internet. Of course new is a relative term. What is new to me may not necessarily be new to you (or the Internet). New or not, any change you make to your approach gives you a bit of a fresh start (which is not a bad thing). So, lets explore a few career sites that might be new to you. Speedupcareer.com The tag line on this site is Jobs Careers section featuring useful advice tips on work and job related issues and the site lives up to that. There are tabs at the top of the page for Career, Career Change Job, Work Career and more. Each of these tabs seem to link to a Google ad with related links. The mains page is structured by topic, leading with Resume Writing Tips and followed by Cover Letters, Career Development and a host of other career related topics. Each topic has related links. Once you click on any of the topic links, you will see an article on the topic. On the right hand side of the page there are links for the latest articles and links to the other career categories. This site is definitely worth a read. RezScore This site offers a free web app that reads, analyzes, and grades your resume. How cool is that? We all worry about our resume, while we think it is great, what will the interviewing manager think? Using this site, you can take some of that apprehension out of the equation. How does it work? From the main page, upload your resume and you are on your way. Once you get your grade, you can view tips for improvement, get a resume makeover, see potential job matches and more. Healthcareercenter.org This is a career and job search site that focuses on (as you might have guessed) health careers. There are tabs at the top of the page for Explore Careers, Job Search, Salary Info and more. Center page is a list of health careers by category, each with links to a dedicated page on that topic. Clicking Job Search returns a page with job search by industry (top half) followed by State. Additionally, there are job search resource links at the bottom of the page. Take a look. The New (Job Search) Rules This article was posted on dreams-goals.com and covers three primary career rules. This is a must read whether youve been working for 30 years or are still in school. So often we forget (or perhaps never learned) the key traits for success. Some of us learn it as we go and others seem to get it from the start (and still others will never get it). The Life Skills piece that follows is as much a requirement for career success as are the career rules. 5 Positively Propelling Job Search Tips A great read if youve been struggling in your search. In addition to providing great tips (see below), the lead-in will hit home for anyone who has spent any length of time looking for a job (with limited success). Help for job seekers in a rut -
Help for job seekers in a rut - There is a church down the road from my house with a marquee. It says, Dont count the new year. Make the new year count! That message really rings true for me. So, how to make the most of the new year? Count on yourself! Stop trying to follow everyones rules. Think bigger what have you NOT been doing that you can engage in during the weeks and months ahead? It would be a stretch for me to say there are no rules for job seekers. There are some: have error-free materials, targeted to your employer of interest. Know what it is you have to offer (your pitch). Follow up (always). Have plans and execute them. Stay organized. Id be willing to say that these are rules of job search. Follow them. Think about it when is the last time you tried something new? Extended your comfort zone when it came to job seeking? For me, the obvious go-to extensions are social media avenues. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. There are people who will suggest rules to use these tools. For example, they will try to detail how many tweets you should send daily on Twitter, how much time to spend there and dictate how many of those tweets should be personal or professional. The problem with these rules is an underlying truth (maybe this is actually a firm rule I believe is true): THERE IS NO ONE RIGHT WAY for all job seekers! You are unique and different from every other person. Taking advice for the masses is not likely to help you very much. The media enjoys sharing stories of job seekers who engage in creative tactics. A sandwich board wearing job seeker. Someone who hands out resumes at the grocery store. Job seekers who advertise on Facebook. Or Jamie Varon, whose campaign to get a job with Twitter garnered tons of attention, a lunch meeting with Twitter execs and a job somewhere else. (Jamie now reportedly lives in Italy and is working for herself.) While I am not a big fan of measures that make job seekers appear desperate (a la the sandwich board), that does not mean that it is impossible to be successful with unusual tactics. When is the last time you brainstormed atypical job search methods? For that matter, have you taken advantage of methods Ive shared in previous posts? Use LinkedIn to your advantage. Generate a professional Twitter profile. Engage in creative uses for Facebook. Activate your in-person network. Before you go off the deep end (again, a la sandwich board), make sure you are covering your bases. I wish I could tell you just what to do en masse. However, that would be contradictory to the main message here. YOU need to take the wheel. YOU are responsible for figuring out what you are missing. Can I help you, one-on-one? Of course! Thousands at one time? With guidelines and suggestions, yes. With detailed advice specific to you? Probably not. Think: Whom have you NOT met in person that you might LOVE to meet? Whens the last time you spoke to someone you did NOT think could help you? (You may be surprised.) How can you make it happen? (You CAN make it happen just use some creative thinking and engage with the tools at your disposal.) Get out of your rut by doing something new. Make a plan. Make it happen. You can do it! Donât forget that clear, concise, optimized job search materials AND a strong, well executed plan are key for job search success! I can help with every part of your job hunt! Need a great resume? Tips to use social networking? Interview coaching? If you need help mobilizing your networks and your job search plans, learn more about how I can help you! While youâre at it, donât forget those social networks! Be sure to become a fan of Keppie Careers on Facebookâ¦Iâd be thrilled to have you as part of the community!
